Christophe Sarlin

At first sight, Christophe Sarlin’s works are enigmatic and very beautiful. Between schematization and arbitrary genealogy, historical event and geometrical form, economic system and Chinese landscape art, Christophe Sarlin exhibits what he calls a « correlation system ». This system links the history of art with a particular moment in the world’s history. In other words, the Chinese landscape is not simply a traditional landscape (China 2050), its recognizable form is modelled by China’s eco- nomic forecasts for 2050 ; the « continental blue » square (1963-2007) is not just a minimalist module, it becomes fiction by broadcasting the Warren Commission Report to establish the circumstances of JFK’s assassination ; the genealogical tree, on which Christophe Sarlin’s name figures not far from JFK’s, does not simply represent a logic of artistic filiation, it deconstructs genealogy suggesting the tree as a network of imaginary filiations.
