José Sales Albella

The painting of Jose Sales Albella draws from her Hispanic origins, out of any agreed folklore. He was born in 1964 in the area of Valencia and lives in France since twenty years.

Le Carré Sainte Anne is the source of inspiration of the series called Laps clair. This continuation of 13 large size paintings is composed by 50 x 70 cm units which can be looked like each page of a book.

In the foreground of works, precisely, an open book: point of view of the artist on his relationship with the history of art where here Velazquez dominates.

This book, painted in superimposed, thus refers to the Master, from Ménines, even the Prince Baltazar Carlos on horseback, while passing through the Buffoon Sebastien of Morra.

The reference is not weak. Face at the Velazquez’s large wor. Jose Sales Albella, with modesty, built in background his intimate drama of voluntary exile.

It is this deterritorialisation which makes go up on the surface the « non-dits » of his own culture, his childhood territories in the countryside, his daydream memories, his imaginary, his first agitations, his current reality sometimes twisted like are the dreams.

Jose Sales Albella is in the pleasure of painting. He doesn’t use it not only as discharge system, but he serves it also technically, playing on the perspective, reinforcing it while mixing with his personal and ordinary things puted here and there, in order to give depth to the table and become fixed in modernity to give it even more meaning.

The touch is strong, apparent by moment, painted with large strokes, with subtleties that only oil painting authorizes.

As well as the technique, painting ( just like art in general ) is a matter of meaning, which makes it possible to register it into History, to make it universal, in the better of cases…
